Hackensack, NJ, August 15, 2013 — Stephen G. Pereira, M.D. and Associates (www.laparoscopicsurgerynj.com), one of the Northeast’s premier Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery-focused practices announced today that Dr. Stephen Pereira performed the first robotic single incision appendectomy (removal of the appendix) in the New York Metropolitan area and the state of New Jersey.
With single incision procedures, the surgeon operates through one small incision in the navel (belly button). Previously, the only robotic-assisted single incision procedure performed was gallbladder removal, known as a cholecystectomy.
Whereas standard laparoscopic appendectomy is usual performed through 3 incisions, robotic single incision appendectomy is performed through only one incision, which is hidden in the belly button.
According to Dr. Pereira, this expansion of the single site platform is an important milestone. “I would describe this as the next level of robotic single incision surgery,” he commented.
The single site platform offers a minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy. Considering direct patient benefits, there are typically several, including reduced bleeding, shorter recuperative hospital stays, less pain, and virtually scarless recovery.
