Board-certified surgeon Dr. Stephen Pereira is chief of gastrointestinal surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he specializes in abdominal, gastrointestinal and hernia surgery.

He is also on staff at the hospital’s John T Beurer Cancer Center, applying laparoscopic techniques to gastrointestinal tract cancers. Dr. Pereira was one of the first New Jersey doctors to perform robotic surgery and among the first to use advanced laparoscopy.

“We are learning to perform more complex surgeries with smaller and fewer incisions.” he says. “Robotic single incision surgery is the next frontier.” Patients benefit from minimally invasive surgery with shorter recovery times, less pain and less cosmetic issues.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a UMDNJ graduate, Dr.Pereira completed his residency at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and a fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center. He has been recognized this year as a top doctor by Inside Jersey and a top New York metropolitan area doctor by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd.
